Bristol Symposium – June 4th – 7th, 2013

The third symposium of the pilot phase of the project took place in Bristol, England from June 4th-7th, 2013. The purpose of this symposium was for Engineers Ireland to share their knowledge of online learning management systems with the project partners.

The plan for the symposium was to give the partners an overview of how to optimise their current online learning management systems by using freely available online video tools such as TED-Ed video lessons and myBrainshark video presentation technology.

Day 1: Wednesday 5th June, 2013

Day 1 started with each partner organisation giving a short presentation on their ‘lessons learned’ and progress from their respective learning contract pilot phases. Looking forward to the implementation phase of the project (commencing in October 2013), Aidan Harney (Engineers Ireland) gave the partners a step-by-step guide to the implementation phase so that each partner is fully prepared in October, 2013.

In the afternoon of Day 1 Simon Purdue (Engineers Ireland)  provided an introduction and overview of Engineers Ireland’s Learning Management System, including the use of Learning Contracts within a learning management system along with some basic and complex features that the group may not have been familiar. In order to give the group some context and some new ideas about learning management systems, Katia Bruno (Euroform RFS) and Emilio del Hoya Gonzalez (CECE) also gave presentations about their organisation respective learning management systems.

The finished with a workshop hosted by Simon Purdue (Engineers Ireland) on how to use TED-Ed video lessons to make teaching and learning more interactive. Ted-Ed video lessons lets teachers customise any YouTube clip to use alongside their classroom lesson.

Day 2: Thursday 6th June, 2013

Day 2 of the symposium commenced with a video conference presentation from Carrie Rockett, Boston Scientific Clonmel on how  Boston Scientific Clonmel use myBrainshark technology to help train their new and existing staff. Following the video conference Simon Purdue gave  a group workshop on how to use myBrainshark video presentation technology to all project partners.

The workshops on day 1 and 2 lead to creation of these two tutorial videos on how to use TED-Ed and myBrainshark:

The meeting was adjourned with each partner fully prepared to maximise the potential of their learning management system with the use of TED- Ed and myBrainshark video presentation technology.
